100 Years of Photography Genes

whmorgn8

William Henry Morgan would be jumping for joy if he knew the negatives from the photos he took back in 1917 would be spending time in the dark-room with his great granddaughter Kelly Elizabeth.  I wonder if he knew when he setup his wooden tripod to take this picture that the negative and the love of photography he held so dear, would both find their way down into future generations.  By the look on his face in this picture, I suspect he did.

OBX 2010

IMG_2406 I’m sad to say our week in paradise slipped by all too fast.  We greeted OBX 2010 with a beer on the beach, and before we blinked…the week was gone.  Thank you to everyone for another great week in OBX.  And now….let’s start planning OBX 2011!

Memorial Day 2010 - Summer Begins @ The Lake

It's always amazing how things can change at the lake in just one day. How magical it feels to have the boundaries of winter peel away in a day to reveal summer @ the lake....and yes occasionally google seems to not make the video available (in case you get the video unavailable error).

Savannah GA – Well…well…well….

Carolyn and I just returned from the service learning trip we chaperoned to Savannah GA.  This is an alternative Spring Break trip and we hosted 11 Misericordia University students as we all worked in the Georgia Infirmary and St. Mary’s Community Center.  It was a really nice trip and the people we met and worked with were amazing.

Here are a few photos from the trip…details at the bottom.

Blizzmageddon 2010 !

Here's a quick time-lapse I built over the course of about 2 days or so encapsulating the nasty little storm we had that cancelled work for 2 days and dumped about 2-feet of snow on us. The interval is 1 photo every 5 minutes, but sadly the real heart of the storm came overnight, so it's a little hard to see the real accumulation.

Fire !

HLFire23Feb2010d It’s always odd to hear sirens rushing by the house at 2AM.  You wake and wonder if it’s the soundtrack of a nightmare or real.  Sad to say, last night it was real.  We awoke to see quite a sight across the far side of the lake from our house.  Not sure of the cause yet, but it’s a safe bet that on a cold Feb night, someone probably had a heating failure of some sort.  Thankfully only one person lived there and he made it out.  The house is of course a total loss and as of first sighting, the flames were 60+ feet high.  The hand held, through the window, maximum zoom photo does it no justice, but you get the idea.

Feb 2010 Nor'Easter SnowStorm

We had a "little" snow last week so I decided to time-lapse it. The snow started overnight so it's not as interesting as I originally hoped...but still fun to watch. In the end it was about 18-inches, but be sure to check out the icicle forming just after dark on the first night.

Who Said You Can’t Grow Potatoes in Feb?

When we stopped in to buy our Christmas tree back in mid-December, our local gardening and greenhouse guru made a funny face when I mentioned we were growing potatoes.  He even repeated back to me “POTATOES?”  Well in the immortal words of Gomer Pyle, “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!”  I bring you fresh greenhouse potatoes…

January in the Greenhouse

I snapped a few photos in the greenhouse today.  With single-digit temps outside, it seemed like a good idea to capture a few photos that make me think of spring and warmer weather.  Of course while the outside temps are around 2F today, it’s a balmy 65F in the greenhouse as you’ll see from the photos.  The first photos shows off some of our Roma tomatoes (yes our tomatoes continue to produce despite the shorter days and limited daylight.)  The second photo shows something we just discovered today.  Our Epiphyllum Jeffrey Kida has finally shown some signs of life after 8-months.  This is one of the Epi’s that Jeff’s nephew gave us when we visited San Diego last June.  They’ve been alive, but doing very little for 8 months so we’re really excited to see growth.

Nope we’re NOT Flooded….

For our left-coast and out-of-town family, you may have been seeing our local flooding on the news.  Basically we had a 55F day with 3-inches of rain and lots of snowmelt combine to make a mess.  I thought I’d let everyone know we’re dry and show a few photos of the Susquehanna river.  It’s not nearly as bad as we’ve seen in the past, but still impressive.

Photo 1 shows a view from the east side of the dike.  I cover both sides of the river on my lunch-run.  In the foreground I typically run next to the furthest trees out into the river and on the opposite side I run along the larger trees.  As you can see both are well under water.  Photo 2 shows the view from my office window with the local press vehicles doing the noon news and Photo 3 shows the view looking south at the new Millennium Circle project and the Market St Bridge.  It’s hard to see in the photo but the portal gates are both closed.
